An Introduction

About us

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, aptly called “Ship Builder to the Nation”, is one of India’s leading Defence public sector undertaking shipyard under the Ministry of Defence. Main activities are construction of warships and submarines with facilities situated at Mumbai and Nhava (under development). We have the capability to build warships, submarines, merchant ships upto 40,000 DWT since 1979.

For outfitting work, the company has a large number of workshops with sophisticated equipment and machines specific to hull fabrication and ship construction work. The Company has qualified manpower to implement CAD/CAM/CIM using the latest ship design software’s, operating from a number of work stations having the latest computer hardware to provide, up to date design and production support, commensurate with for the yard’s capabilities. The workforce is well trained in various disciplines. Regular training programmes keep the men technologically abreast of the latest techniques of their profession.

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited, Mumbai, an ISO 9001: 2008 Company is one of the leading shipbuilding yard in India. The History of Mazagon Dock dates back to 1774, when a small dry dock was constructed in Mazagon. Over the years, MDL has earned a reputation for quality work and established a tradition of skilled and resourceful service to the shipping world in general and the Indian Navy & Coast Guard. It was incorporated as a Private Limited Company in 1934.

After its takeover by the Government in 1960, Mazagon Dock grew rapidly to become the premier war-shipbuilding yard in India, producing warships for the Navy and offshore structures for the Bombay High. It has grown from a single unit, small ship repair company, into a multi-unit and multi-product company, with significant rise in production, use of modern technology and sophistication of products. The company's current portfolio of designs spans a wide range of products for both domestic and overseas clients. Since 1960, MDL has built total 795 vessels including 25 warships, from advanced destroyers to missile boats and 3 subma8rines. MDL had also delivered cargo ships, passenger ships, supply vessels, multipurpose support vessel, water tankers, tugs, dredgers, fishing trawlers, barges & border out posts for various customers in India as well as abroad. MDL have also fabricated and delivered jackets, main decks of wellhead platforms, process platforms, jack-up rigs etc.

Modernization

Mazagon Dock Shipbuilders Limited (MDL) had successfully completed the augmentation of their infrastructure through Mazdock Modernisation Project (MMP) which comprises of a new Wet Basin, a Heavy Duty Goliath Crane, a Module Workshop, a Cradle Assembly Shop, Store Building and associated ancillary structures.

MDL is aiming at a paradigm shift in warship and submarine construction enabling integrated modular construction thereby reducing the construction period. Post-modernisation, MDL capacity for shipbuilding has increased from 8 warships to 10 warships since 2014 and submarine capacity has increased from 6 submarines to 11 submarines since 2016.

Kanhoji-Angre Wet Basin:

The new Wet basin equipped with 4 Level Luffing Cranes is a Civil Engineering marvel constructed in a marine environment offering 27000 square meter of berthing space to accommodate two large frigates and two submarines for outfitting which adds to MDL’s self sufficiency of its berthing needs.

Module Workshop:

Module shop having an area of approx. 6000sqm with two 50tons EOT crane and retractable roofis designed for the fabrication of larger hull blocks, substantially pre-outfitted within a covered environment, wherein level of completion of outfitting in shop would be increased resulting in considerably reduced build period, improved quality together with better working environment for the operatives.

Goliath crane:

The Heavy Duty Goliath crane is having a lifting capacity of 300 T and is straddling across two slipways and the module shop with a span of 138m. The crane is equipped with future that enables overturning of modules to undertake construction of large ship block and thereby reducing build period considerably.

Cradle Assembly Shop:

The Cradle Assembly Shop (CAS) along with Store Building has been constructed as part of construction program of submarines. The CAS is primarily being used for fabrication and pre outfitting of cradle structure in unit block assemblies. A store building with provision for automatic retrieval system and storage facility for sensitive sophisticated components under controlled environment is also annexed to the CAS.

SSA Workshop:

The submarine-building capacity has been further enhanced by construction of additional Submarine Section Assembly Workshop (SSA) of 9,900 square meter. The workshop comprises of two bays, equipped with EOT Cranes (30T) as well as semi goliath cranes, which will facilitate fabrication as well as assembly of submarine units simultaneously. There is Blasting & Painting Chamber inside the Workshop to facilitate cleaning, blasting & painting of the Submarine Sections. The workshop is operational since 2016.

Shore Integration facility (SIF):

Shore Integration Facilities (SIF) have been created for Shipbuilding and Submarine Divisions separately for Integration and simulation of various equipment and systems prior fitment onboard. The actual equipment, cables and connectors are used in SIF to keep alive critical electronic components .This unique facility will enable reduction in build period of warships and substantially reduces the testing time of submarine.
