The moisture content of a soil, that is the percentage of water present expressed as a percentage of its dry weight, is a means both of classifying and indicating the conditions of soil type.
A number of techniques have been suggested in order to carry out reliable water content tests. These include those recommended in IS:2720 (II)

Speedy or rapic moisture tester range 0-25% complete with pressure vessel fitted with moisture gauge, a counted poised balance to weigh 6gm of sample, scoop for measuring Calcium Carbide powder cleaning brush, steel ball and Calcium Carbide reagent powder 500gm, complete set in wooden box.

Same as above but range 0-50%
Model TICOM - 270
Torsion Balance moisture meter range 0-100% +0.2% temperature range 110oC for 5-7 gms. sample for 25 gms. sample suitable on 230V, single phase AC supply.
Other standard methods are oven drying and sand method.
