Cefuroxime Axetil:

An oral prodrug of the bactericidal cefuroxime antibiotics.

Effective against wide range of gram positive and gram negative organisms including beta lactamase producing  strains.

Clavulanic Acid:

Possess the distinctive properties of a broad spectrum antibiotics and β-lactamase inhibitor.

Protect cefuroxime from degradation by β-lactamase enzyme.

Effectively extends the spectrum to include many bacteria normally resistant to cefuroxime and other β-lactam antibiotic.

Combination of Cefuroxime and clavulanic acid provides a solution for treatment of bacterial infections caused by β-lactam resistant bacteria.

Cefuroxime axetil/clavulanic acid 500 mg/kg twice daily is more effective as amoxicillin 500 mg/kg three times daily in the treatment of pneuminia and produces fewer gastroinrestinal adverse effects,particulary diarrhea.

Cefuroxime/clavulanic acid,"follow-on" therapy produces clinical and bacteriological efficacy equivalent to that of amoxicillin/clavulanic acid,with the advantage to twice daily oral administration.
