Duplex Steel Pipe is a metal alloy pipe that is made out of steel with different alloying elements. The name comes from the dual nature of the material. The duplex material contains bot the austenitic and ferrite structures in the metallurgy of the material. These properties bring the material the best of both ferritic and austenitic steel types. The pipes could be hot rolled or cold drawn. The hot rolled ones are stronger and the cold drawn ones are seamless and accurate in dimensions. The Duplex Seamless Pipe is used in applications with high precision requirements. The ASTM A790 Duplex Welded Pipe is an example of welded duplex pipe. There are different grades of duplex pipes with different mechanical properties. There are duplex, super duplex and lean categories in the Duplex Stainless Steel Pipe varieties. The Seamless Duplex Pipe is both strong and is highly corrosion resistant.
The corrosion resistance comes from the addition of alloying material, mostly the chromium content. The ASTM A790 Duplex Pipe is resistant to pitting corrosion and crevice corrosion. The pipes could also be electric fusion welded. The ASTM A928 Duplex EFW Pipe comes under five different classes with each class having a special mechanical property setup. The electric resistant welded pipes are stronger and they could be used for extensive welding. The Duplex ERW Pipe is used in high temperature applications along with the Duplex Stainless Steel EFW Pipe as well. There are different shapes and sizes of these pipes. The round and hollow pipes are usual ones. In addition to the Duplex Stainless Hollow Pipe and the Duplex Steel Round Pipe there are square, rectangular and hexagonal pipes available in the market. The applications of these pipes include heat exchangers, mechanical structures and component, tankers and fuel transportation systems.
